What are hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is merely an altered state of awareness in which you are more receptive to suggestion, a daydream state. It is a natural state of mind which everyone experiences daily and is one of the oldest aids to the process of healing.

It is not sleeping (as the name would imply) and it is not being totally awake. It is a different state of consciousness/awareness to both sleeping and waking as evidenced by emperical data from EEG tests, nevermind to the physical signs.

In the cloudy consciousness between falling asleep each night and waking in the morning every human being is in a hypnotic state of awareness! A person can always be brought out of hypnosis so there is no cause for concern. There is absolutely nothing mystical or magical about this state (as many powerful stage hypnotisits would have you believe), you are always in control.

The fears of hypnosis are misguided. There is no question of being manipulated or blurting out one's secrets. the trained therapist is soley your professional guide, helping you tap into the power within yourself...your subconscious mind. Einstein reckoned that the mind is like an iceberg with 90% of its potential lying untapped below the surface. Hypnosis acts as a window to this power.

All to often people rely on conscious willpower alone to make positive changes in their lives, yet few succeed. Therapy while in hypnosis is much more effective. Hypnotherapy is a tool for human change. It is the utilisation of the hypnotic state to achieve therapeutic goals. Whether by suggestion therapy or by psycho-analysis whilst in hypnosis (hypnoanalysis) the payoffs are immeasurable!

PSYCHOANALYSIS

A treatment method developed by Sigmund Freud. Freud conceived a variety of theories of how people are controlled by powerful unconscious forces which are in conflict with their conscious minds. This therapy attempts to recreate and resolve that conflict, which originates in the person's emotional past.

These conflicts are subconscious so we are not aware of them before therapy. The trouble with conventional psycho-analysis is that it takes a long time. I have heard Dr. Micheal Yapko PHD say of psychotherapeutic interventions: the person needs help now.

SUGGESTION THERAPY

The therapist guides you into a deep, relaxed state of mind which enables her to plant directly into the unconscious, suggestions which will prove beneficial to the client. In this relaxed state, the subconscious can focus creatively and imaginatively (daydream) on the positive suggestions the therapist provides. This therapy is frequently indicated for habit control or for symptom relief for physical complaints.

Often a tape recording of the session is made. When the client returns home and listens privately to the tape, the hypnotic state happens again and the repetition of the suggestions has an enhanced effect. This type of therapy has proven effective in the battles to stop smoking, lose weight, or simply relax.
